Lapino Might not Make it

Lapino the Stuffed Rabbit

My son’s Toy Rabbit

“Please tell mom to sew lapino’s head back because its starting to fall/rip off – “N”.”

This text was sent to me at 2:22 am today by my son. Clearly he is distressed and standing watch over Lapino. They’ve been together since “N” was born. Maine, Tunisia, Europe, Washington, Guadeloupe, Mexico, now California, only separated by the occasional sleep-over where social acceptance barred Lapino from joining. Almost 18 years, and through thick and thin, Lapino has been has been N’s most faithful and dearest friend.

Surgical intervention appears to be the only recourse but perhaps it is time to let Lapino pass. “N” will soon find the comfort of another warm body to cuddle to. Life goes on.

He might not, however, be able to make this decision and sometimes it is up to a close family member to “pull the plug”, as it were.  I never thought Lapino would make it this far, that they would have gone their own ways perhaps 6 or 7 years ago.

Of course, if surgery is not performed then we will need to consider a suitable ceremony and remembrance, and a place to lay Lapino to rest. Cremation seems a possible choice as the recyclers pass only once a week and do only paper, plastic and glass – it appears Lapino may be discriminated against once more by what is “socially acceptable”. “N” would be devastated, to be sure, and would need much comforting. If this is indeed what we have to do, your financial gifts to help Nathan find solace will ease the burden.

Your collective advice would help ease that decision for my wife and I.
