Sacha, you are probably right. If I was on the goal line and the ball was coming at me I would instinctively reach up and grab it. The only difference is I would be playing one of the other kinds of football. I played lots of soccer/football and never saw anyone ever try and touch the ball. I have watched plenty of games on tv and no one does that. It is not an intergral part of the game, on the goal line or not.

I laugh when I hear that Suarez "cheated". The whiners certainly take merit away from the excellent campaign that Ghana had. Not only that, it detracts from the country and the whole of Africa and exposes you to be a continent of whiners. Maybe that's why you're in so much trouble.

Recognize your mistakes, admit that you were at fault, try to be better the next.

It's all part of growing up as a continent, a country and an individual.

Good luck.

@Svendiet , thanks for the nationalistic tone . But to answer your question of degree of fairplay , obviously the harsher the infraction , the harsher would the punishment be .

Really , there is nothing unethical about handballing . It is part of soccer . If you are in the goal mouth , you are telling me you wouldn't do it ? It's impossible not to .

You guys should all be on Gyan and the other Ghanaians that missed their penalty kicks not on poor Suarez and his country of just 3 million people .

So many comments here to respond to, so many, in fact, I think I'll respond with a new post. Thanks to everyone for your comments, even if I don't answer you individually.

OMG, I see people supporting Suarez' ... and the b*st*rds handball.

Initially I thought that, the handball was just an emotional burst, but when I saw the b*st*rd celebrating after Gyan's miss, I thought this world has lost Sportsmanship altogether.

I do not follow football, and neither know much about the present Uruguay team, I was just watching the world cup for some nice football action, and witnessed some nasty handball ... And I sincerely wished Uruguay should loose. Ghana deserved to WIN.

I was happy to see the Dutch win.

Shame on Suarez ~~~

I agree Carly boy. It was a scumbag way to win a game. Excusing unfair play is simply a matter of degree. Does it eventually become ok to physically injure a star player on a breakaway in hockey, an unhittable pitcher, or a great quaterback, simply because there is a punishment for it. Pundits will argue that he was just following the rules to do absolutely anything to help his team win and therefore it is ok. It is more than that. It is a code of ethics that is hugging the floor. I want to say it is cultural behaviour, but in reality even the west European nations succomb to the cheating (see the German goaltender account of the English non goal). Maybe the whole game is rotten to the core. Let's hope that if the USA ever gets really good. It is by elavating their skill while at the same time maintaining a higher moral and ethical code of play. For the time being, let's hope for a west European victory and I am not talking about Spain.

By the way, too bad about South America. You can be sure some poor sucker will be killed over this. Another thing, that Floran guy looked a little German.

(yes, I dont follow football every day of my life because i actually have one)

Author, frustration has gotten the best of you. You abandoned all knowledge and understanding of the sport (and the spirit behind it) in favor of cheap shots. Both Ghana and Uruguay played extremely well, and the result was allowed by rules that were followed and by a referee that was fair in applying them.
I would much rather see you cheering for Ghana's bright future than barking at a team that proposed only good football and which also brought hope to its hope-hungry people.
