Uruguay Has to Go
Sports news by Carly Boy
I’m for Africa in the World Cup. Germany will win and I’ll be pleased. The Netherlands will win and I’ll be pleased. South Africa has been a wonderful host, and it will be a World Cup to remember.
But Ghana won. It is fitting that Africa as the host continent have a player in the game. That player was Ghana.
Uruguay lost. Oh yes, they may have put one more ball in the net during the post-game shoot-out. But they lost on all other accounts.
Uruguay is no Brazil, no Argentina, not even a Mexico. It’s a second or even third tier Latin American team that did not have a single respectable win in the whole tournament.
Ghana became Africa’s team. Hell, even Mandela welcomed them into his home. Ghana played with emotion, pride, sportsmanship. I don’t remember seeing any swim team members on the Ghana squad. Brave young men only.
Suarez made a mistake, informed by his emotion, his desire to win such a crucial match, but not by integrity. As a man, and as a sportsman, he did not do the right thing. The right thing would have been to play by the rules – and having made his mistake, to take that ball and throw it into the net.
The Netherlands has a job to do now, and it’s not just to move forward in the semifinal. The Dutch men will right the Suarez shame with a show of sportsmanship. They will not dive and feign mortal injury. They will play by the rules and they will rightly kick Uruguay’s unworthy ass. It would almost be better though if Suarez were to be on the field, to share in his country’s well-deserved defeat.
And we will all remember that Ghana – and Africa – won that game. And the one before it, against Uruguay.
Update: Please read my posting today on Suarez in answer to all those who commented.

NO, unfair and unjustice were the refs who allowed them to kick the Uruguayan players during the whole game. Also, if you look closely, the guy is offside when the ball is kicked. Not only tha, but we also didn’t have a penalty in our favour. It would have been unfair if Uruguay hadn’t advanced, not the other way around.
wow what a ridiculous article where to begin?
uruguay had no respectable wins in this tournament? they beat the host easily, they beat mexico soundly, they took over the south korea game with the outcome on the line. don’t give me that, you know nothing about uruguayan football and you didn’t watch a single one of their games if you truly believe the senseless drivel you’ve written in your article.
uruguay won the game WITHIN THE RULES. suarez was punished for his action. had gyan buried the PK like he was supposed to, NO ONE would be complaining about that handball. any football player involved in the world cup would have done EXACTLY the same thing as suarez did if they were in position to save their team’s season. i would not want anyone on my team who WOULDN’T put their body on the line to save that ball from going in the net. it is the absolute opposite of disgraceful, he put himself out there and took the punishment for his team and for his country. he will go back to uruguay a hero, just like any footballer who was in his position would go back home a national hero.
and if you want to talk about cheating, how about the blatant dive by the ghana player that set up the free kick. if that wasn’t cheating i don’t know what is. or how about how stephen appiah was offsides (barely offsides, but offsides nonetheless) before his shot on goal. don’t give me unfair, you are as one-sided and biased as they come.
Very well said Carly! I couldn’t agree more!
Proudly African
Are you serious ?
Do you have any idea what football is about ?
Have your ever read football rules ?
In Ghana vs Uruguay nothing was out of the rules.
Mr Suarez was penalized, red carded and Ghana was granted with a penalty shot.
The rules were applied. That’s all.
In Argentina 1978 WC, there was an identical situation, when footballer KEMPES (ARG) stopped a ball and the Polish team was granted with a penalty shot, that Poland failed, as Ghana did too.
By the way, Uruguay won against South Africa (3-0), Mexico (1-0) and South Korea (2-1).
For your guidance, Uruguay won the WC twice and 14 times Copa America.
In addition, the first WC tournament was celebrated in URUGUAY in 1930.
Why don´t you give a gentle visit to FIFA web page and get informed about Uruguay ?????!!!!!!!
You clearly have personal hate towards the Uruguayan people. Take a a course before writing ridiculous articles. If anyone “has to go”, it’s the writer of this article.
You can call it what ever you want, but the fact remains
Ghana lost not because of a handball but because of
poorly taken penalty shots.
Ghana Choked, it had the opportunity (twice) to make it OK
but they could not.
There were broken rules , agreed, and they were penalized.
Uruguay has won the world cup twice do not underestimate them. A penalty was granted to Ghana they did not make it In that is there fault. Get your head out of your ass
Ridicules statement!!!!! Hand balls happen all the time and are often not called. Ghana got a penatly kick and blew it. Germany beat England by a clear-cut goal not being counted (it would have been a big difference if the teams had gone to the locker room 2:2 as opposed to Germany going in leading 2:1).
Very selective to pick on Uruguay for sportsmanship!!!!
Terrible article man and I am not even hispanic . Uruguay deserves more respect than that ! They qualified ahead of Argentina and are respectable . Forlan is world class . That game with Ghana was great end to end action . It is too bad Gyan couldn’t score the penalty but you can’t fault suarez for what he did . He had no choice and the rules allow for it that way . You handball it , you get a card and a penalty .
HAHAHA< URUGUAY CHEATERS LOSE, HAHAHAHA, AND THE WHINE LIKE SCHOOLGIRLS AFTER HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
CHEATERS NEVER PROSPERS. THIS IS FOOTBALL NOT HANDBALL!!!
Mzolisi I forgive you because you are from Ghana!
The free kick which led to the Suarez incident was an absurd refereeing error. Uruguay left back Jorge Fucile was yards away from a Ghanaian who slipped. Not even with that advantage could they beat Uruguay …
GOOD ARTICLE. Did your parents not teach you you Uruguayans, CHEATERS NEVER GO FAR. Well except the long flight back home.
Author, frustration has gotten the best of you. You abandoned all knowledge and understanding of the sport (and the spirit behind it) in favor of cheap shots. Both Ghana and Uruguay played extremely well, and the result was allowed by rules that were followed and by a referee that was fair in applying them.
I would much rather see you cheering for Ghana’s bright future than barking at a team that proposed only good football and which also brought hope to its hope-hungry people.
I agree Carly boy. It was a scumbag way to win a game. Excusing unfair play is simply a matter of degree. Does it eventually become ok to physically injure a star player on a breakaway in hockey, an unhittable pitcher, or a great quaterback, simply because there is a punishment for it. Pundits will argue that he was just following the rules to do absolutely anything to help his team win and therefore it is ok. It is more than that. It is a code of ethics that is hugging the floor. I want to say it is cultural behaviour, but in reality even the west European nations succomb to the cheating (see the German goaltender account of the English non goal). Maybe the whole game is rotten to the core. Let’s hope that if the USA ever gets really good. It is by elavating their skill while at the same time maintaining a higher moral and ethical code of play. For the time being, let’s hope for a west European victory and I am not talking about Spain.
By the way, too bad about South America. You can be sure some poor sucker will be killed over this. Another thing, that Floran guy looked a little German.
(yes, I dont follow football every day of my life because i actually have one)
OMG, I see people supporting Suarez’ … and the b*st*rds handball.
Initially I thought that, the handball was just an emotional burst, but when I saw the b*st*rd celebrating after Gyan’s miss, I thought this world has lost Sportsmanship altogether.
I do not follow football, and neither know much about the present Uruguay team, I was just watching the world cup for some nice football action, and witnessed some nasty handball … And I sincerely wished Uruguay should loose. Ghana deserved to WIN.
I was happy to see the Dutch win.
Shame on Suarez ~~~
So many comments here to respond to, so many, in fact, I think I’ll respond with a new post. Thanks to everyone for your comments, even if I don’t answer you individually.
@Svendiet , thanks for the nationalistic tone . But to answer your question of degree of fairplay , obviously the harsher the infraction , the harsher would the punishment be .
Really , there is nothing unethical about handballing . It is part of soccer . If you are in the goal mouth , you are telling me you wouldn’t do it ? It’s impossible not to .
You guys should all be on Gyan and the other Ghanaians that missed their penalty kicks not on poor Suarez and his country of just 3 million people .
I laugh when I hear that Suarez “cheated”. The whiners certainly take merit away from the excellent campaign that Ghana had. Not only that, it detracts from the country and the whole of Africa and exposes you to be a continent of whiners. Maybe that’s why you’re in so much trouble.
Recognize your mistakes, admit that you were at fault, try to be better the next.
It’s all part of growing up as a continent, a country and an individual.
Good luck.
Sacha, you are probably right. If I was on the goal line and the ball was coming at me I would instinctively reach up and grab it. The only difference is I would be playing one of the other kinds of football. I played lots of soccer/football and never saw anyone ever try and touch the ball. I have watched plenty of games on tv and no one does that. It is not an intergral part of the game, on the goal line or not.
