Canadians Love Their Big Cars
There’s a big similarity between Canadians and Americans that Canadians probably wouldn’t like to admit to. We love our Big Cars. Yeah, just like our American cousins, we love those big beautiful, gas guzzling, environment destroying cars.
If we have the money to pay for one of those big luxury cars, we are going to buy. No old cars for us. We really don’t care about the environment if we can afford our luxury car because, after all, we do recycle our pop cans and wine bottles, especially since there’s money to be had in taking our wine bottles back to the LCBO. For my American readers here, a little definition, the LCBO is the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the Canadian monopoly over the alcohol we drink store. That, too, is another blog posting on this news site.
It’s a status symbol here in my city – not to be a victim of the public transportation system, better known as the TTC in Toronto. Yeah, I admit, it’s hell to have to ride the TTC to work everyday. Squished in, pressed against stranger’s bodies you never wanted to get close to, but, hey, that too is a news posting for another day.
We don’t care about global warming if we’re driving a big Mercedes, a Porsche, a Lexus, an Audi or a BMW. Really, we don’t. Care. We feel good about the impression we’re making. After all, a big luxury car is the symbol of the Canadian / American dream. We don’t even care when our local news reports on the poor quality of the air that hangs over our city on those hot, humid summer days. To hell with it, we are driving our Porsche Carrera to work! No matter the fuel emissions. No matter the hydrocarbons. Who cares about carbon monoxide gases? We don’t care about the cost of parking or the environment because – it’s the status of owing a big luxury car.
I’ve noticed there are a few more e-bikes on the road these days. A few more scooters and motorcyles and bicycles. But hostility for these riders is most evident from the owners of these big luxury cars. You can see it when a bicycle, a mere little bicycle or a little ebike cuts off one of those big luxury cars. The drivers of those big luxury cars, step on their gas, accelerate with the violence of a mad man with testosterone problems. After all, that’s the Canadian / American dream of a big luxury car that a little e-bike rider is cutting in front of and offending. Golly!
